This course is designed for the student who wants to learn about how color and a variety of repetition can influence the rhythm of a painting. Working with brushes, painters tape and palette knives, students will combine contrasting colors, color families, pattern, and line variety to create seemingly effortless arrangements. For the beginner to the more experienced painter - this class is great for anyone who would like to create a unique and dynamic composition.

Oil Painting I

Class Objective:

To gain a basic understanding of the oil painting process and materials. Using techniques and weekly demonstrations that discuss the most common problems you will encounter in painting.

All supplies are provided.

This course is ideal for beginners or those with minimal experience. Students will progress through the basic, structured steps of the painting process in this 7-week course. Learn different ways of starting paintings, using paint as a wash and practicing old master techniques. Each class begins with a demo or lecture, followed by time for student work in a supportive environment. Understand color and how to apply oil paint to develop a firm foundation for future work. Students will create a Landscape Self-Portrait by choosing a landscape painting by one of the Hudson Valley River Painters and we will integrate their portrait within the landscape. We will touch upon a multitude of styles, techniques, and approaches to suit diverse student interests—a fun and fruitful time for all!

Students will use their creativity to build an imagined surreal still life (used as a reference) for their paintings! We will touch upon a multitude of styles, techniques, and approaches to suit diverse student interests—a fun and fruitful time for all!
